Whitewater: The Thrill and Skill of Running the World's Great Rivers
Published in Hardcover by Black Dog & Leventhal Pub (October, 2001)
Authors: Mark Blaine and Scott Shipley
Average review score:

Moving Up The Charts
Whitewater moves up to #446821 in sales. Take that, East St. Louis.

The Yin for which kayaking is the Yang
What can I say? From the first sentence, this book grabs you like a drowning child and doesn't let go until you're a weeping mass of emotional flotsam, flapping about on the bathroom floor. Uncontrollably weep at its brilliance! Wonder at the ability of this large man to stay afloat! Shudder with ecstasy as each new passage leaves you yearning, nay - aching for more! Cackle like a shrieking rooster, page after page after page!

No extensive whitewater library is complete without WhiteWater!

HOT DAMN! THIS BOOK RULES!
I just recieved Mark Blaines book last week as a gift and was instantly drawn to the catchy title and exciting cover shot. Judging a book by it's cover it looked great so I headed straight for the bathroom. No, did not use it for toilet paper! I just do my reading away from the hurricane that is my home. As a testament to this fine book my legs fell asleep and have fallen asleep a couple of more times since. Anyone that has spent anytime sitting on a toilet can tell you, you sit too long your legs fall asleep.
But I digress, the point of this meandering is that this book is great and fun to read. Interspersed within the more technical information are brief descriptions of whitewater rivers around the world. This is a format I really enjoy as it allows my A.D.D. afflicted brain a cunning diversion. I have done a bit of whitewater rafting and kayaking and find after reading this book a renewed feeling of desire for not only the boat but the feeling that a river rewards you with. The complete inundation of senses coupled with waves of adrenalin(and sometimes nausea) that a whitewater trip provides.
I am a practical person and a parent I may not be able to hit the river right away but atleast I can tuck myself away in my bathroom and escape to the rivers of my mind thanks to Mr. Blaine.

Generals in Khaki
Published in Hardcover by Ivy House Publishing Group (March, 1999)
Authors: Henry Blaine Davis and Henry, S.J. Davis
Average review score:

Outstanding
Mr. Davis' book is an inspiring yet very personal account of the men charged with fighting one of history's bloodiest wars. Filled with interesting facts and accounts of the generals' lives, this book is the closest thing we have (and may ever have) to really knowing these great men.

A very hard-to-put- down reference text - totally unique!
This is the only book of it's kind - all the generals of WW1 - there is a picture and short bio of each. Henry Davis has written a book that has filled a niche for any one with an interest in American Military history!

Leap of Faith: A Blaine Stewart Mystery
Published in Paperback by Signet (September, 1995)
Author: Sharon Zukowski
Average review score:

Great Book
This author is up there with the greats of modern crime fiction. I look forward to finding and reading more written by this author.

Her main character is tough and flawed - but not afraid to acknowledge her flaws. The plotting was very interesting and topical.

I would seriously recommend this book to all devotees of tough women protagonist crime fiction.

Wonderful
This author has had some harsh reviews from professional reviewers for the Blaine Stewart series. I find these totally unjustified.

This is a wonderful find for me - a new author in the Paretzky mould. I can't wait to read the other books in the series.

Blaine is a tough, widowed alcoholic PI but not so tough that she has to win every encounter in her professional or personal life.

Gritty and topical plotting, realistic characterisations, tons of suspense and romance. What more could you ask for?

The Windwalker
Published in Hardcover by Bookcraft Pubs (December, 1979)
Author: Blaine M. Yorgason
Average review score:

A classic on life and death
The meaning of life and death are examined in a most wonderous way through the sightless eyes of an old Lakota warrior. The tale is touching and packed with insight. After reading this book, I am amazed it has not been acclaimed as a classic examination of how life is to be lived and how death is an important part of life.

Beautifully told in a lyrical poetic way, each page is a joy. For those who love Native American culture, you will find an accurate, respectful account of Lakota life. For those who enjoy good literature, this book will satisfy you by providing an intriguing story you will not be able to put down. But most importantly, it will teach and remind you of what is important in life - it is truly a book for students of life.

This book goes far beyond the Native American perspective it is told in and will speak to all people in all circumstances. We are all touched by the themes of aging and death and this story will speak to your heart.

Wonderful fiction portrayal of Native American life
An excellent read! Windwalker accurately portrays Indian beliefs in a respectful way. It tells the story of an old man still learning what is really important--family--and his role, even though he can't provide and protect as he did before. His thoughts throughout the story add a bit of humor while still teaching the reader the lessons he's learned. The old man's dream in life finally being realized makes it a wonderfully touching story!

The Analysis and Design of Pneumatic Systems
Published in Hardcover by Krieger Publishing Company (September, 1976)
Author: Blaine Wright Andersen
Average review score:

This is THE reference for advanced pneumatics
This book introduces a practical approach to advanced pneumatics. The theory is enough to understand and support the design procedure and formulas, but it is not going too deep into gas flow theory as an example.

Most of the topics are taken all the way from introduction to a reccomendation of what coeficient values to use in the calculation. Also I am not aware of any other book giving design procedures for control analysis like this book.

This book is reprinted in 2001, and it is definitely worth the [price] for anyone designing advanced pneumatic systems.

I have a copy of the reprinted version (ISBN 1-57524-164-1) , and Andersen is promising us a new version soon. In this version he will switch to the SI system and all the imperial system units will fortunately disappear!

After a more basic book like, say, Pinches (ISBN 0-13-489790-0) the Andersen book is the one to continue with.

The Bishop's Horse Race

Excellent!
Very funny and well-written with a lot of good lessons. Probably best for boys 12-16, but neither inappropriate for advanced younger readers nor too simple for those older.
